DRESS – THE STATE OF OUR SOCIETY

The dress a person wears gives valuable inputs as to the type of person he or she is. His nature or personality is revealed by the dress he wears. Generally bright and multi-coloured are worn more by women than men. This is a natural tendency just as flowers are bright coloured. In the olden days of our father and grandfather, men used to prefer white coloured shirt spotlessly washed and ironed and dark-coloured trousers, mainly black. This denoted truthfulness and straightforwardness. The dress code commanded respect to authority. Even now some men prefer plain or lightly striped shirts and dark pants. Such men may be calm in their outlook,do their duty without much ado. If any man wears dark coloured trousers and shirts together take it that he is not secure, wants to hide, be inconspicuous and even stealthy. Nowadays we find young men with multi-coloured, brightly printed shirts which denote their flamboyant outlook to life. Bright colours look good on children who are much more happy in life because responsibility and burden have not touched them. A simple dark coloured pants, bottoms and light coloured tops look good on women too because they give an elegance and a look of intelligence. Today’s youth wear various types of dresses; baggies, patched shirts & trousers, torn and faded in the name of setting trends. This presents a confused state of mind made into a fashion outwardly. Womens’ revealing dresses may be more enticing, but I have often wondered whether these people may have a purer heart. For them life could be an open book.

Therefore dress becomes an outward expression of one’s state of mind. A collective mind makes a society and fashion trends reflect the state of the society. If the reverse is true, fashion parades and beauty contests may be playing a part in the shaping the state of our society. This may be in the form of creating more wants, more desires, more greed and more hypocrisy.
